Don’t be like him.
Don’t be like the guy who wasted 30 years of his life for nothing.
Who is this guy?
Well, if you’ve ever heard my story, you’ll know that I used to work for a civil engineering company and spent a lot of time on construction sites representing the senior engineers from the office.
And when you work in construction, you meet a lot of different kinds of people...
There are competent professionals. There are hardass bosses barking orders. There are workers who are legit gang members...
But most of the time, the people that you meet are normal, average Joes just trying to make a living. They got into the business because it was the only job that they could find.
You see, the “one guy" I’m talking about was an average Joe in his 60's who never made anything of his life and was actually content with it.
We were once wrapping up a day on the job, and I overheard his conversation with a fellow worker. He was saying how he only had a few months left until he retired, and then he’d be done and never look back.
“It’ll be like the last 30 years never happened.”
And he actually said that joyfully, with a freaking smile.
But it hit me like a ton of bricks.
I can’t think of anything more depressing.
To live through supposedly the best years of your life and then not want to think about it again?
Now, I’m not saying that you can’t have a great, fulfilling career in construction. And it’s not my intention to be condescending or elitist here. In fact, this could happen in any career whatsoever.
The point I’m trying to make is that a man spent his entire freaking life doing something, and after 30 years, wants nothing to do with any of it...
Even if all he was doing was supporting his family, wouldn’t that have been worth it?
Even if all he was doing was building homes, hotels, and high rises for society, wouldn’t that have been worth it?
Even if all he did was build infrastructure for our civilization, wouldn’t that have been worth it?
Evidently, not for him.
Take a look at the quote again… “It’ll be like the last 30 years never happened.”
At the end of your career... do you want to be like this guy?
Do you want to spend your entire life in a job you hate and never do anything about it?
Do you want to look back and have no legacy?
Do you want to look back and think that it was all for nothing, and that life wasn’t worth living?
Do you want to live with purpose?
Do you want to make a difference in the world?
Do you want to make your voice heard?
